A mechanized bakery has been operating in Klaipėda city since 1832. It was the oldest known bakery to use steam in bread production in the country. Therefore, the recipe of scalded bread has been secured and fostered from year to year as a tradition of bread baking.
UAB Klaipėdos duona, as a joint stock company, operates from 1993 but the bakery itself was established in 1977 in Klaipėda. From the beginning the best bread making craftsmen have been working there. They bake bread according to their forefathers’ recipes of scalded bread and use only high quality flour, yeast, sours, and scalds without any chemical additives. Klaipėdos duona’s bread was soon recognized for its distinctive taste and aroma not only in Klaipėda district but also all over Lithuania. As the company is expanding, its craftsmen share their experience with young bakers thus ensuring the continuity of bread baking and recipe maintaining traditions.
Currently, the company bakes about 80 various bread, cake and confectionery products. Yearly output is about 15 000 tons. The company employs 530 employees. Yearly turnover is up to 10 million EUR. Quality and safety of products are guaranteed because the company works in accordance with implemented quality management system ISO 9001 : 2000. The Lithuanian baking industry specialists appraised the Klaipėdos duona company and awarded medals in the Lithuanian product of the year 2000 and Lithuanian foodstuffs for the year 2000 competitions to the brand Klaipėdos plikyta (Klaipėdos scalded). Light bread Baltų šviesioji (The Balts’ light) and round wafer sheets won golden medals in the Product of the year 2005 competition.
