A mechanized bakery was already functioning in Klaipeda in 1832. It was the first national bakery where steam was used for the production of bread. The scalded bread recipe has since been maintained and nurtured every year as a local feature. UAB Klaipėdos Duona operates since 1993, but the bakery itself was founded in Klaipeda in 1977. The company has since employed only the best bread makers. They are making bread according to ancient bread recipes, using only high-quality flour, yeast, sourdough and scalding exempt of chemical additives. Due to its outstanding flavour and aroma, the bread of UAB Klaipėdos Duona quickly became popular not only in the Klaipeda region, but also in Lithuania. While the company was expanding, its professionals shared their experiences with new bakers, ensuring the continuity of bread baking recipes and traditions.
The company currently makes about 180 kinds of pastries. There are 30 types of bread, 80 varieties of white breads, cakes and confectionery. The annual production is about 15,000 tons. The company employs 430 people. The product quality and safety are ensured, because the company works under the quality management system ISO 9001:2000. In 2000, UAB Klaipėdos Duona was awarded by bread industry specialists – it received nominations for ”Lithuanian Product of the Year 2000" and "Lithuanian product 2000" for scalded bread and for the round wafer sheets – the gold medal for “Product of the Year 2005”.
Long-lasting tradition
The company preserves and cherishes the Lithuanian tradition of bread baking. More than three decades ago the company technologists introduced and advanced the bread baking processes, incorporating only minor changes. The traditional ancient dough preparation technology is used and production lasts about 24 hours. As a result, naturally, original leavened bread recipes, a favourite of Klaipeda and West Lithuanian residents, have a very palatable taste. UAB Klaipėdos Duona experienced personnel cherish the best traditions of bread making and preserve its valuable ingredients and naturalness. No preservatives or other additives are used for bread making according to the traditional recipe.
